Description

EDM Oil, or Dielectric Fluid, is a highly specialized fluid used in the Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) process, also known as spark machining or spark eroding. The fluid is essential for the function and efficiency of all wire and sinker EDM operations.

EDM oil is typically a highly refined, low-viscosity hydrocarbon fluid, often based on paraffinic or isoparaffinic mineral oils, but can also be synthetic. It is non-conductive, meaning it acts as an electrical insulator in its normal state.

The fluid is pumped into the gap between the workpiece and the electrode (tool). During the EDM process, high voltage is applied across this gap. The oil’s primary roles are to insulate the gap until the voltage is high enough to create a controlled electrical discharge (spark), and then to flush away the eroded metal debris once the discharge occurs.
